Things are Heating up in Northern Nevada.

Every year, we are impressed by how trees handle standing outside in 90 degree heat without being able to move and while they provide us with shade, they are not getting much shade themselves.  Of course, trees have evolved in very different ways from humans, buy just like us they “sweat out” water in order to hydrate.

This process is known as evapotranspiration.  It is how trees transport water through their roots, trunks, branches and eventually out of their leaves.  This particular process brings nutrients and water to all parts of the tree, and essentially allows the tree to breathe.  That old mantra climate change (whether you are a proponent or not) puts added stress on trees.

Nevada’s Tree Removal Laws.

Nevada’s tree population continuously grows.  Cities like Reno create programs to increase the shade cover and general population of trees.  However, the city and state do not require that citizens acquire a permit for tree removal before cutting down a tree in their yard.  Please check to make sure this applies to you and your property.

Tree removal CAN be a relatively easy process.  When you rely on a tree removal professional to do the job and comply with the specific laws and codes of your area.  No matter what area you live in, the safest distance to plant any hedge or tree shorter than 25 feet in most states is within 20 feet of power lines.

The Trees of Truckee.

Trees of all shapes and sizes abound in and around Reno and Northern Nevada.  Recently, an assessment was made about the trees in our area.  It was funded through an American Reinvestment and Recover Act grant, that was passed to the Nevada Division of Forestry from the U.S. Forest Service.

They reported that with just under 5% regional tree canopy cover, it is apparent that the urban forest of the Truckee Meadows is in its infancy but that development patterns are adding trees and canopy cover to the broader area.  Good tree care will be needed to substantially increase canopy cover.

To Prune…or not to Prune.

It is not a question of if, but rather of when.  Is it prudent to trim trees in Northern Nevada in the middle of winter?  Here is a short answer.  Pruning deciduous plants in the winter promotes fast regrowth in the spring, as most of the plants around here are dormant during the winter.  Let’s start with that.

1.  Pick a mild, dry day to prune

2.  Start with the dead and diseased branches

3.  Then remove the overgrown and diseased branches

4.  Hire a professional

Hey…You Down There…We’re Alive Too!

The trees on your property can’t talk, but maybe if they could they would remind you that they have been around (in many cases) a lot longer than you.  In point of fact, right here in the Silver State we have the oldest living trees on earth.  Healthy trees measure the passage of time with their rings (leave grandpa alone!)
